Wonder Doors currently builds two door types: an inward opening single bookcase door and an outward opening single bookcase door.

The difference sounds simple, but the right swing affects furniture, walkways, floor clearances and how the hidden room feels to use. It is one of the first decisions to confirm before the door is quoted.

First, choose the viewing side

For this guide, imagine you are standing in front of the bookcase and looking at its shelves.

An inward opening door moves away from you, through the opening and into the room behind the bookcase.
An outward opening door moves towards you and into the room where the bookcase face is visible.

The hinge can be on the left or right for either swing. Swing direction and hinge side are two separate decisions.

When an inward opening door can work well

An inward swing keeps the bookcase from moving into the space in front of it. That can be helpful when the bookcase faces a hallway, lounge or other area where people regularly walk past.

It needs enough clear floor area in the room behind the bookcase. Check for:

desks, shelves or storage close to the opening
another door that could collide with the bookcase
steps or changes in floor level
switches, fittings or trim near the swing
the path a person will use when entering the room

An inward door should not make the hidden room awkward to enter or take away the only useful place for important furniture.

When an outward opening door can work well

An outward swing preserves more of the room behind the bookcase. It may suit a compact office, pantry or storage space where every part of the internal floor area matters.

The bookcase needs a clear arc on the visible side. That means checking:

the width of the hallway or room
nearby sofas, tables and shelving
whether people could walk through the swing unexpectedly
skirtings and floor transitions
doors or cupboards that open into the same area

Because the bookcase carries shelves and real objects, it occupies more space while moving than a thin internal door. The swing needs to be considered with the shelves loaded.

Hinge side matters too

Right hinge is our standard starting point, but the room decides what is practical. A left hinge may provide a cleaner path into the hidden room or keep the opening bookcase away from nearby furniture.

When looking at the bookcase face, ask:

Which side gives the clearest approach?
Where will the handle feel natural to reach?
Which edge can move without hitting trim or furniture?
Once open, where should the bookcase sit while someone walks through?

Photos of both rooms are useful because a hinge decision that looks good from one side can create a problem on the other.

New build or replacement opening

In a new house or renovation, the opening and nearby furniture plan can sometimes be adjusted around the preferred swing.

When replacing an existing internal door, the wall, floor, old jamb and room layout already set more of the rules. The existing door direction is useful information, but it does not automatically mean the heavier bookcase should swing the same way.

Do not choose from one measurement

Opening width and height are important, but they do not show the full swing area. We also need to understand the surrounding wall and the space on both sides.

one photo looking straight at the opening
one wider photo showing the surrounding wall
a photo from the room behind the opening
the rough opening width and height
the distance to nearby furniture, walls and other doors

The choice should feel obvious on the plan

There is no universal winner between inward and outward. The best choice is the one that gives the door a clear loaded swing, lets people move through comfortably and works with how both rooms are actually used.

The swing direction and hinge side are recorded in the door order and quote before the build starts.
