Real bookcase. Real door.
Engineered for fully-loaded shelves and thousands of opens. Heavy-duty hardware, clean reveals, no wobble.
Standard single door, smart shelving
We're focused on a standard single bookcase door at a few set heights, with shelves you can move up and down to suit your books and pieces. Custom sizes and bespoke builds are available on Auckland installs.
Starting in Auckland, NZ next
We install in Auckland ourselves while we sharpen our shipping kit and instructions. NZ-wide shipping is rolling out soon, and the regions with the most waitlist interest go first.
Where they shine
Rooms that suddenly make sense
A bookcase door is most rewarding in the rooms that aren't quite working, the office off the lounge, the pantry by the kitchen, the awkward storeroom near the entry. Replace the visible door with continuous joinery and the whole space settles down.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a hidden bookcase door?
A fully functional door built to look and behave like a real bookshelf. It carries real books and decor on the front and swings open to reveal the room behind. Our doors come in two parts, the frame that fits around the opening and the bookcase door itself that hangs in the frame. -
What do you build at the moment?
Right now we make a single, standard-sized bookcase door, built to order. You pick the height (we work to a few standard heights to suit most NZ ceiling heights) and the shelves inside slide up and down so you can lay it out around your books and pieces. Keeping the range tight means we can keep the price down and the build quality dialled in. -
Can you build a bigger or fully custom door?
Yes, but only in Auckland for now. If you're outside our standard size or want something bespoke (wider, taller, different timber, a unique trigger), we can quote it as a custom Auckland install. Outside Auckland we're sticking to the standard single door while we get our shipping and instructions right. -
Where in New Zealand do you install?
We're starting in Auckland because we want to be on site for the first installs and write really clear instructions as we go. We're planning to ship around NZ in the near future. The more interest we get from a region, the higher that region moves up the list, so jumping on the waitlist genuinely helps us prioritise. -
Why install in Auckland first?
Every installation teaches us something we want to put into the written instructions for the rest of the country. Doing the early ones ourselves means the shipped version that lands at your builder's place is properly thought through, not a first draft. -
What trigger mechanism do you use?
Our current doors use a hidden latch system, it's reliable, quiet and easy to live with. We're actively exploring other mechanisms (pull-book triggers, magnetic touch-release, key-locked options) for future builds, but for now every door we ship uses the latch. -
How much does a hidden bookcase door cost in NZ?
Because we're focused on the standard single door, pricing is much tighter than a fully custom build. We quote in writing before any work starts with materials, finishes and freight (if you're outside Auckland) spelled out. Custom Auckland builds are quoted separately. -
Can I install a bookcase door myself?
If you're an experienced DIYer or you have a builder on the job, yes, the door is designed to be installed by a competent tradie outside Auckland. That said, our preference for now is to install in Auckland ourselves so we can keep refining the instructions for everyone else. -
How long does a Wonder Door take to build?
Typical lead time from deposit to installation (or dispatch) is 6 to 10 weeks, depending on workshop load and material availability. -
Do bookcase doors actually work in New Zealand homes?
Yes, and they hold up to real family use because they're built locally to NZ framing standards. Imported hidden doors arrive sized to North American framing, which makes for an awkward retrofit. Building yours here means it fits your opening, matches your interior, and is serviceable later by a phone call.
